Where judges are in short supply, the experience has prompted some litigators to feel a greater appreciation for the judges they have.

Discussing the judge shortage in Bergen County, New Jersey, some lawyers who regularly practice there spoke highly of the way judges in the court’s Civil Division are leading during this difficult period.

O’Dwyer also earned plaudits from Paul da Costa, who noted that the judge was a trial lawyer before going on the bench.

“So he actually understands intimately what our civil jury trial system means to clients and attorneys,” da Costa, of Snyder Sarno D’Aniello Maceri & da Costa in Roseland, said. “And he’s also beyond accommodating to all of the trial lawyers, in terms of always being accessible to try and reach settlements and try to get accommodations. But when it’s all said and done, his hands are tied behind his back, and there’s only so much he can do.”
